Tips to Stay Spooky and Safe This Halloween

Tips to Stay Spooky and Safe This Halloween

Keeping you and your family safe while participating in Halloween activities and trick-or-treating is very crucial to us, that is why we came up with a list of tips and tricks to help you do so. Continue reading the tips below for your key to a happy Halloween.

Pumpkin Carving:

  • Don’t let your small children ever carve a pumpkin! Instead let them draw on the pumpkin and then give it to you to carve it.
  • Instead of lighting up your Jack-o-lantern with a candle use a flashlight or glowstick.
  • If using a candle to light up your pumpkin carving, be sure it is in a safe place and is being watched at all times.

Halloween Costumes:

  • When costume shopping buy items that are fire resistant.
  • Make sure the costume can be easily spotted in the dark. If it can’t be seen easily, place reflective tape on it or make sure your child carries a flashlight with them throughout the night.
  •  Use face paint and or makeup instead of wearing a mask. Wearing a mask can restrict you vision and could cause unnecessary problems.

Trick-or-Treating:

  • Accompany your children when trick-or-treating.
  • Only go to houses with a porch light on.
  • If your children are older, agree on a time that they should return home, and make sure they are carrying a cell phone with them.
  • Make sure your children know to never go into a stranger’s house or car.
  • If baked goods are being offered, politely turn them down.
  • Teach your children if they get lost to call 9-1-1 or your local police station.
  • Beware and avoid pedestrian injuries by:
    • Staying in a big group.
    • Walking on well-lit sidewalks.
    • And crossing the street at marked locations.
  • Watch out for pets and yard decorations while approaching a house.

Candy Time:

  • Spread your treats out over time, don’t eat them all in one night!
  • Parents: have coloring books, stickers, markers, etc. ready for when a trick-or-treater has a food allergy.
  • Examine the candy. Throw away any items that are open.

Drivers:

  • If you new to driving around Halloween, then don’t drive on Halloween.
  • Keep your eyes open. Look for any children that could be walking on or crossing the street.
  • Watch for children at every turn you make.
  • And ALWAYS stop for pedestrians.

Homeowners:

  • Sweep your sidewalk, make sure there are no wet leaves stuck on it.
  • Remove all items from your yard that could cause trick-or-treaters to trip and injure themselves.
  • Check and replace any lights that have burned out.
  • Restrain your pets.
